Drawing is one of the first ways kids start to express themselves. Some children might even start drawing before they start talking. Experts estimate that kids start doodling at around 12 to 18 months. Since they don’t have fully developed motor skills yet, kids usually move their whole arms to draw, requiring large sheets of paper and sizable crayons, markers, and pens.

Early kids’ drawings don’t make much sense. When they’re two or three years old, they might draw circles, lines, zigzags, and so on. Colors become interesting, too; toddlers feel especially proud of deciding which color to use. Given that, kids of this age can try to draw something familiar or things that remind them of something. As they get older, kids start drawing figures, especially humans. A circle with two sticks usually represents a person, and kids aged three to four start depicting that in their drawings. At this age, children also start trying to name what they’re drawing, often including letters in their pieces, even if they can’t read and write yet.

By the age of four to five, kids begin to tell stories with their drawings. When sketching their family, kids will make the most important person to them the biggest; for example, Mom. A new style might emerge for some kids, which experts call “X-ray style.” An example of that would be a house that we can see inside of from the outside.

Drawing helps kids refine their motor and develop their cognitive skills. But that’s an unlikely reason why they like it so much. Kids would much rather draw something than, say, learn or do another kind of strenuous mental or physical activity. That might be because it makes them feel happy (duh!) and helps them regulate their emotions.

A 2021 study showed that drawing distracts children from being in a sad mood. It didn’t matter what they were drawing, whether imaginary or real scenes; all that mattered was the process of drawing itself.

When kids draw a person with some extra legs, that doesn’t mean they don’t know what a human looks like. Researchers have found that kids sometimes add silly things to their drawings simply because they think it’s funny. Even if sometimes their drawings aren’t accurate, the drawings reflect what they know about the world.

For example, researchers in 2024 found that even when a kid draws a tiger that doesn’t really look like a tiger, it still seems like a sort of animal. That indicates that the toddler or child understands what a tiger is and simply doesn’t have the artistic ability to depict it accurately.

At the same time, kids don’t draw what they don’t know or haven’t seen and encountered yet. Children’s developmental specialist Dr. Melodie de Jager explains that if a child is not aware of a windmill, they will not draw a windmill. Interestingly, that extends to the child when they draw a self-portrait.

“If they are not aware that they are standing on solid ground, they do not draw a grounding line underneath their self-portrait,” de Jager writes. “If they are not aware of their ears, they do not draw them nor use them to listen the first time. If they do not spontaneously draw a neck, it is a sure way of telling that the child is not ready to read or write yet.”

Living in an apartment building means you are never completely alone — thin walls, shared corridors, and facing windows can turn a normal day into an unexpected encounter with your neighbor.

But not everyone is a full-time busybody like Aunt Petunia from the Harry Potter series, craning their necks to spy from their windows. Sometimes you just can’t help but overhear — or get a little curious about — whatever mischief your next-door neighbor is up to.

It also makes living in a city more interesting, where communication and connections are few and far between.

A reddit user recently asked people who live in apartment buildings “What’s the most unexpected thing you’ve accidentally seen through a neighbor’s window?”

Some of the responses are odd while others are downright hilarious. But they all remind us why living in an apartment is never boring.

The sweetest was a couple who would waltz in their very very tiny apartment. They seemed so happy

The weirdest was next door neighbors would take their dog out to their yard so he’d empty his bowels. The thing is they would both follow him around and stand there staring at him silently while holding hands. It was super creepy for some reason.

I was just taking my trash out, and there was a sound I didn’t recognize. I turn to look, and there were goats in my neighbor’s apartment. She was rather baffled when I asked about her hircine guest a few days later. Turns out, Her BF had rented a bunch of goats to play a prank of his best friend. He felt bad leaving the goats in the truck, so he brought them in the apartment for a few hours, until he packed them back up and drove them away to do the prank, without telling my neighbor.

Apartment living inevitably creates proximity and these strange encounters are bound to happen once in a while whether you like it or not, thanks to the way the buildings are designed.

We spoke to Quill R. Kukla, a philosophy professor at Georgetown University in the US, who says that “seeing and hearing (and sometimes smelling) things about one another is part of the fabric of urban life.”

“Our current trend of building glossy loft apartment buildings with huge windows, and building them with cheap material that is not soundproof, heightens our access to one another’s business.”

Kukla is also the author of ‘City Living: How Urban Dwellers and Urban Spaces Make One Another’ (2021), a book that explores how living in close quarters shapes daily life and social interactions.

People-watching is not just limited to apartment buildings or neighbors. Europeans have been doing it since the 17th century, when cafes became a place to not only have coffee but also watch life unfold. From city streets to public parks, many people enjoy observing human behaviour and social interactions in real time.

It is our inherent need for connectedness and curiosity that draws us in.

“I live in Germany, where yelling at your fellow building residents for misusing shared spaces like halls, courtyards, bicycle racks, and foyers is famously a national pastime. But even the yelling helps us all feel that we are people who share space rather than living in our own private bubbles,” Kukla shared with Bored Panda.

However, living in shared spaces also makes us think where the boundary really is.

Kukla believes urban dwellers are smart enough and “know how to deal with proximity.”

“We have distinctive skills for managing one another’s comfort zones, knowing how to adjust to one another’s pace, knowing when to engage and when to stay out of one another’s business, and just generally how to cope with the chaotic intermixing of bodies,” they add.

Research shows that people living near shared spaces often report lower privacy levels and it’s no wonder that many add blinds or reflective glass to reclaim their personal space.

At the same time, being aware of our surroundings, as long as it is harmless and respectful, is simply a part of life in urban spaces.

“Surveys show that urban dwellers are more comfortable with diversity than others… It makes us more tolerant and understanding of the differences between us, and less threatened by these differences,” Kukla says.

About 20% of men will cheat on their spouse at some point

Nobody ever expects their marriage to end in infidelity. When you tie the knot and say your vows, you commit to spending the rest of your life with the person you love. Unless, that is, they decide to throw it all away for someone else. Unfortunately, cheating is one of the most common reasons why marriages fall apart.

And according to psychologist Briony Leo, “Research tells us that, on average, around 20 percent of men are unfaithful to their spouse, as compared to 13 percent of women.” However, she notes that these numbers only include self-reports, so it’s possible that even more people are cheating and just keeping it to themselves.

Research from the Institute for Family Studies also found that men become even more likely to cheat in their fifties, sixties, and seventies. However, not every marriage is incapable of surviving infidelity. In fact, 53% of relationships where at least one spouse has cheated are still intact.

That doesn’t mean that it’s easy to work through those issues. And of course, things can become much more complicated when there’s a baby involved. But it’s not unheard of for affairs to lead to new life.

One study published in Current Biology estimates that, over the past 500 years, about 1% of the European population was born as a result of an extramarital affair. Meanwhile, in Australia, research has found that about 10% of children may have been conceived during an affair.

Once a person has learned that their spouse got another woman pregnant, it can be extremely difficult to give the marriage another try. Richard Nicastro, PhD, notes on his site that infidelity trauma can lead to a wide range of emotions, including rage, disbelief, confusion, insecurity, anxiety, and deep sadness.

It’s natural to feel disgust for your partner after finding out that they’ve cheated

Navigating all of these feelings while trying to make decisions about the future of your marriage can be overwhelming. And as the author of this story noted, it’s common for those who have been cheated on to feel disgust towards their partner.

“This kind of disgust doesn’t just make us turn away—it upends our sense of reality, forcing us to question the truths we once took for granted,” Dr. Nicastro explains. “This is the cruel nature of betrayal. It doesn’t just break your heart—it can prompt the same survival instinct that disgust was designed for, turning someone you once longed for into someone you can’t stand to be near.”

It’s natural for the mother in this story to want to keep things cordial and as “normal” as possible for her children, at least until the holidays are over. But as many commenters pointed out, she owes her son the truth.

PsychCentral warns that keeping secrets from kids can cause suspicion and resentment. It might also create a false sense of reality, which will be shattered when the truth inevitably comes out.

Just because it’s not easy to be honest with your children doesn’t mean that it’s not worth it. Especially when they’re old enough to notice changes in their parents’ behavior, kids will start creating their own stories if they’re not given the full picture.
