Where is Cambridgeshire?
So, where is Cambridgeshire? A county in the East of England, its most notable settlements include the county town of Cambridge, the cathedral cities of Peterborough and Ely and the market town of Huntington. The region borders Lincolnshire to the north, Norfolk to the north-east and Suffolk to the east. Essex and Hertfordshire lie to the south, with Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire to the west.
Living in Cambridgeshire
Cambridgeshire’s characterful and historic towns and cities often claim a spot in the Sunday Times’ Best Places to Live guide. Why? Let’s start in Ely – one of the country’s smallest cities. Here, period homes and a riverside setting promote an air of quiet beauty, while lantern towers grant romantic views of the county’s wetlands.
In the green-belt ringed county town of Cambridge, you’ll discover an intellectual’s paradise. The town’s status revolves around its prestigious medieval university, where student life intermingles with the modern bars, restaurants, and shops serving the wider community. It’s also home to some lovely parks, a botanical garden, and a river famous for its idyllic punting scenes.
However, Cambridgeshire is not all about the weekend. The growing local economy is doing well, contributing £22bn to the UK. Since 2009, employment in the area has also been on the rise, supporting hubs for artificial intelligence, life sciences, food production and advanced manufacturing. Anglia Ruskin University and The Open University have campuses in the county too, so whether you’re looking for a world-class education or a new career, Cambridgeshire has plenty to offer.
You can also explore the county’s wartime history in your downtime, symbolised by the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial. Alternatively, let your cares float away at the Cambridge Folk Festival, roam 254.5 hectares at Wicken Fen, visit Peterborough’s Norman cathedral, or jump in the car for a day trip to AONB coastlines in neighbouring Norfolk and Suffolk.
“The local economy is doing well, contributing £22bn to the UK”

Cambridgeshire has excellent road links connecting its towns and cities to the wider country. The M11 provides a direct route from Cambridge to the M25 and Central London. Travel east to west via the A14 or use the other main A-roads to quickly reach the region’s largest settlements.
Cambridgeshire also lies within easy commuting distance of London and Essex. From Cambridge train station, services run to London Liverpool Street in 70–90 minutes. Besides this, Kings Cross is reachable in as little as 50 minutes, with St. Pancras International just over an hour by rail.

Where is Southampton?
Southampton is a major port city located on the coast of South East England, in the county of Hampshire. It’s a good 70 miles southwest of London, and not far from Portsmouth, another storied coastal city.
Why live in Southampton?
Southampton regularly features in ‘top places to live’ type lists for England and the UK (sixth-best, according to PwC!). And it’s not hard to see why.
Firstly, its location is enviable. It has great access to London by road and rail, as well as the best hotspots on the south coast. It’s also nestled right between two scenic wonders – South Downs National Park and the New Forest. Plus, Southampton has its own international airport, if none of that appeals!
As for the city itself, Southampton has a fascinating history, which is does well to maintain and show off to residents and visitors alike. Tudor House, Solent Sky, and SeaCity are just three examples of great museums within the city centre. There’s also the medieval town walls, the Norman-era St Michael’s Church and literally dozens more sites of historical importance to explore. Southampton also has the dubious honour of having launched the Titanic on its fateful voyage.
Don’t make the mistake of thinking that Southampton’s best days are behind it though. They aren’t. The city routinely ranks high for job opportunities, excellent healthcare and education services, and its expansive retail, dining and entertainment scenes. These are supported and enriched by the city’s two main universities, Solent University and the University of Southampton. The latter is consistently ranked among the top 100 universities globally and carries out world-leading research.
Add in vast green spaces – like the 326 acre Commons in the heart of the city – amazing musical and theatre venues and sports teams, and you have a city with great appeal for everyone.
What are average property prices in Southampton like?
Sadly, all of these advantages come at a price. Southampton is, on average, a significantly more expensive place to buy property, compared to the rest of the UK. In December 2024, the 12-month average house price for Southampton stood at £279,000, according to Rightmove.
This is £6,000 lower than the UK housing price average, as recorded by the ONS in December 2023. This may still be a little pricey, but Southampton’s property market is also varied and dynamic. This means that even though you shouldn’t expect to find too many bargains here, there are good prospects for more affordable properties. That’s if you play your cards right, have good timing, and enjoy a little bit of luck!

East Sussex is a small county in the region of South East England. Tucked neatly in between West Sussex, Surrey and Kent, East Sussex enjoys a long stretch of English Channel coastline. This is where most of its main towns can be found.
Why live in East Sussex?
Even though it’s not a large county, East Sussex packs natural beauty into practically every square mile. For starters, most of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is located here, and it’s utterly gorgeous. This 1,461km2 slice of English heritage is worth exploring to the fullest.
Heading south, the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs are another perfect postcard scene showing off the county’s ability to inspire awe in nature. This is just one high point of many, as the entire East Sussex coastline is full of similar splendour.
As for places to live in East Sussex, consider its idyllic villages for starters. lfriston, Ditchling and Fletching are just three examples of the quintessential rustic English villages that dot the East Sussex landscape.
If you want something a bit livelier, you only have to look towards the likes of Eastbourne, Hastings, Newhaven and, of course, the dazzling city of Brighton. Frequently called the coolest, hippest city in the country, Brighton is heaven for those who like independent coffee shops, funky clothes, avant-garde architecture and cuisine, and basically all things “trending”.
Overall, East Sussex is a highly diverse county, full of great places to live, work and explore. With low crime, good professional opportunities and a high concentration of ‘good’ and ‘outstanding’ Ofsted-rated schools, it’s an appealing prospect to almost any property hunter.
What are average property prices in East Sussex like?
Given how desirable it is, it’s not surprising that this county comes with a big price tag. In December 2024, Rightmove recorded the East Sussex house price average as £418,000. This is £116,000 more expensive than the average house price for England, recorded as £302,000 in December 2023 by the ONS. It’s also a full £133,000 higher than the average for the UK as a whole, cited in the same report.
It’s pricey, but with a location like this, there’s still outstanding value for money to be had in East Sussex.

While you wait, you’ll find plenty to amuse you, from a collection of country parks and nature reserves to Becontree Heath Leisure Centre’s Olympic-sized swimming pool and a great range of shopping and health facilities. Although the borough doesn’t have its own university, Coventry University has a campus based in the former Grade II listed civic centre. It offers a range of courses with flexible study schedules and entry requirements.

Several London Buses operate in the borough, with the N15 and N86 night buses travelling into Central London, Stratford, Romford and Harold Hill. The A12 and A13 thread through the north and south, respectively. Cyclists are well catered for too. Beginning in Barking, the Cycle Superhighway 3 stretches to Canary Wharf, the City of London and Westminster. What counts as South West England?
South West England is essentially the ‘foot’ of the country, extending from Bristol all the way down to the very south-westerly tip of Cornwall, at Land’s End. Together, this official region of England takes in seven counties: Bristol, Cornwall, Dorset, Devon, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire.
Why live in South West England?
For most people moving to South West England, the main draw is the chance to carve out some peace and quiet somewhere beautiful. The region is simply stunning from top to bottom. It has more than 700 miles of outstanding beaches that stretch from North Devon to Bournemouth. It has wild, windswept, majestic moors like Dartmoor National Park. And practically everywhere in between is a green, verdant belt of beautiful English countryside.
Even though South West England is the perfect antidote to frantic big-city living, it’s not a sleepy place to live. Cornwall is a vibrant UK tourism hub that offers constant excitement, along with the best surfing in the country. Bristol is a city that perfectly marries its rich, storied history with a modern sense of energy and opportunity. Across the region, you can have your clotted cream and eat it too, as it’s possible to enjoy a slower pace of life but also easily step back into the action at will.
As well as its specific attractions, South West England is also famed for its overall culture of friendliness and welcoming community spirit. This goes beyond showing surface-level niceties to tourists – studies show that people genuinely are friendly down here! The Office of National Statistics says that people living in the South West are generally happier, enjoy higher self-esteem, have less anxiety and find a better work/life balance. It’s one of the safest regions in the country too.
Transport in South West England
While road transport into and out of Cornwall is frequently a bit tricky, the region itself is very interconnected. Reliable A-roads criss-cross the coasts, connecting Plymouth, Exeter and the towns of Cornwall. The M5 then links Exeter with Bristol, which is the gateway to the east of the country.
Rail links are also improving across the region. In 2019, £5.7 billion was announced for the modernisation of the Great Western Line. Today, this is translating into better, faster and more reliable train services for everyone living across the South West.
Due to its success as a tourism hub, the region is also well served by national bus and coach routes. Getting down to Dorset, Devon, Bristol of Cornwall is an easy fix from almost any major UK city.
Property prices in South West England
In late November 2024, Rightmove’s house price average for South West England is £354,000. While this is a touch above the England-wide average of £302,000 (December 2023 ONS report), it still represents good value for money in many of the country’s most sought-after areas.
